Methodology: How We Track the Guitar Price

Trust is the whole product here, so this page documents exactly how the numbers on this site are produced — and where their limits are.

What we track

Every guitar in the current Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, and Squier catalogs — electric, acoustic, and bass, from a $109.99 Fender FA-25 and $179.99 Squier Sonic to Gibson Custom limited editions. We do not pick a selection: if the brand lists it, we track it. For each model we record the price at three kinds of sources:

• The brand's official US store (gibson.com for Gibson and Epiphone, fender.com for Fender and Squier). Direct stores sell new units at MAP street price, which makes the official figure the reference point every other price is compared against.
• Independent dealers — Chicago Music Exchange, Willcutt Guitars, The Music Zoo, Elderly Instruments, and Music Villa. We chose the largest independently-owned US dealers whose storefront data is reliable enough to sync programmatically. Dealers discount older stock and slow finishes below MAP, which is where the real savings live.
• Amazon, as a check link: every row links to a prefilled Amazon search for the exact model, so the live price is one click away.

How official store prices are collected

Each catalog is synced programmatically from the brand's own public storefront data (the same feed its shop pages are built from), on a weekly cadence. For gibson.com that feed is served on the store domain itself; for fender.com it is served from Fender's own Shopify storefront origin (fender-us-prd.myshopify.com — the backend host fender.com's shop is built on), because the www domain puts its JSON feed behind a bot challenge. The data is identical either way — it is Fender's own catalog feed — and every "Official" link still takes you to the product page on fender.com.

Each sync pulls every finish variant of every model and collapses them to one row per model: the price you see is the cheapest finish, linking to that finish's product page. Used, vintage, serialized one-off listings (Gibson Certified Vintage, Custom Shop one-of-a-kind pieces), and made-to-order configurators (Fender Mod Shop) are excluded — they are single units, not a catalog with a stable price. Sibling budget brands (Epiphone, Squier) are tracked as separate catalogs.

How dealer prices are collected

Dealer prices come from the dealers' own public storefront data — the same product feeds their websites are built from — synced weekly on the same ritual as the official catalogs. We only track new, current-production Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, and Squier guitars: used, vintage, consignment, left-handed, dealer-exclusive one-offs, and guitar-and-case bundles are filtered out before matching.

Each remaining listing is matched to the catalog model it actually is, within its own brand (a dealer's Gibson never matches a Fender model). Matching is deliberately conservative: exact name matches and high-confidence token overlaps are accepted automatically, everything else is reviewed by a human in a weekly report (a correction file decides the doubtful cases by hand). When a dealer stocks several finishes of a model, the "Best dealer" column shows the cheapest one and links straight to that listing.

How Amazon prices are collected

We link to Amazon rather than quote a price we cannot keep fresh. Amazon figures change hourly and mix Amazon's own inventory with third-party marketplace sellers; without a reliable feed, any number we showed would be stale within days. Accuracy beats coverage: the "Check" link opens a prefilled search for the exact model, so what you see on Amazon is live by definition. If dependable Amazon data becomes available through the Product Advertising API, real prices will replace the link.

The table shows the sources side by side: the official store price, the best dealer price, and the Amazon check link, with the cheapest real offer highlighted.

Honest limits

• Prices are indicative. Stores can change prices at any hour; between our weekly syncs, the live price may differ from what we show. Always confirm on the store's page before buying.
• Dealer stock rotates. A dealer price shown here may sell out between syncs, and new arrivals appear between syncs too. The link always leads to the dealer's live listing.
• We track advertised prices before coupons, gift-with-purchase bundles, and trade-in credits, which can make your effective price lower than our figure.
• Finish variants sometimes differ in price; we show the cheapest finish, which can shift between syncs.
• Sales tax and shipping vary by buyer and are excluded from all figures.
